Online poker players have developed hundreds of poker terms and abbreviations over the last 10 years. Even the most savvy players have to consult a poker term dictionary, like this one, from time to time. This web site will list all of the essential poker related terms in 2010. I will also include the basics of "internet language". This should give the reader a solid resource for when they are at the poker table and want to know if the player they just rivered is insulting them or not. It's always good to fight fire with fire so we'll also list some good comebacks that are guaranteed to piss the average online poker player off and hopefully effect his/her play. Here are some links to my other poker related resources:
I would say that the most commonly used poker term is either "fish" or "donk". I tend to use this term quite liberally at the poker table. These insults get thrown around almost every session. If someone rivers you with a BS hand it is very important that you call them something. They will usually just laugh at you though. If you call someone a fish or donk when YOU win a big hand that is when you can really get under their skin. Another solid way to get under players skin is to "lol" after every win. This tactic may make the player call bets that he/she otherwise wouldn't have called. After about 2-3 "lol's" the player will be dying to do the same to you. You can be creative and use any "lol-like" term you want such as; lmao, lmfao and haha. If you really want to get dirty you can say "lol fish" or "lmao donk". Another solid insult is saying "thank you fish" or "ty donk". The objective is to make the player change his game.
Many players do not know what a "suckout" is. Sucking out is similar to when someone rivers you. Basically if you are in the lead until the last card and then the other player catches his miracle card and wins he is sucking out.
You'll see a lot of calling stations in games that require little to no skill, like NL Hold'em. These players call nearly every hand. They tend to have big bankrolls and small brains.
Pissing online poker players off is somewhat of an art form. It requires creative thinking and a solid understanding of psychology. Simply calling someone a fish one time is not going to get them worked up enough to make mistakes. There are a number of ways you can achieve this goal but it's really going to be a longer process. I tend to sit at a table and wait til someone sucks out. That is a good way to pick your victim. Once you have selected your target you will need to win a hand against him/her. Saying the same thing after every wins is a good way to piss someone off. Something like "lol f'ing donk" or a "ship it fish" will do. If you say this every time your target loses a hand against you, after about 25 hands it will start to get to him. Some players will find a new table but most poker rooms have a "find a person" feature so you can hunt him down.
If you are playing heads-up I have a very good tip for you, assuming you are up a bit. Wait for your opponent to fall below the minimum buy-in for the table. Once he has imply sit-out and tell him to rebuy. He'll be so pissed due to the name calling and being down that he'll rebuy. Just keep doing it every time he falls below the min buy-in level and keep up with the name calling.
